China Introduces Another Land Rover Defender-Inspired Vehicle

Land Rover Defender

China’s automotive industry has gained a reputation for producing vehicles that draw inspiration from popular models around the world. The latest addition to this trend is the Stone 01, an SUV created by Rox Motor in collaboration with BAIC. Bearing a striking resemblance to the iconic Land Rover Defender, the Stone 01 showcases China’s penchant for recreating beloved designs. In this article, we will delve into the features and specifications of this Defender-inspired vehicle.

Key Features and Design

When observing the Stone 01 from the side or rear, it becomes evident that the vehicle is heavily influenced by the Land Rover Defender. The overall shape and proportions closely mimic those of the British SUV, with even the spare tire on the tailgate replicating the Defender’s distinctive design. However, the front end of the Stone 01 deviates from the original, featuring a unique boomerang-shaped headlight arrangement.

Similar to the Land Rover Defender, the Stone 01 is available in two-wheelbase options. The standard model measures 199 inches in length, 74 inches in width, and 78 inches in height. For those seeking more space, the long wheelbase variant stretches the body to 208 inches.

Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS):

Initial photos of the Stone 01 reveal the presence of three lidars mounted on the roof and front fenders. This suggests that the vehicle may come equipped with an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The inclusion of lidar technology indicates the potential for features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain:

Under the hood, the Stone 01 incorporates a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It comprises a 150-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine acting as a generator for a ternary lithium-ion battery pack sourced from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). The battery pack powers the front and rear electric motors, producing 201 horsepower and 268 horsepower, respectively. This setup provides a balance between fuel efficiency and electric power, catering to the growing demand for environmentally friendly vehicles.

The Rise of Defender Lookalikes in China:

The Stone 01 is not the only Land Rover Defender-inspired vehicle emerging from Chinese automakers. Earlier this year, YangWang unveiled the U8, a beefier version of the British off-roader. The U8 boasts a quad-motor setup, generating an astounding 1,100 horsepower. These vehicles showcase the Chinese market’s fascination with the timeless design of the Land Rover Defender and its appeal to consumers seeking a rugged and versatile SUV.
